Gut health alert! after months of silently threatening to try Kombucha I finally got the opportunity to do so in the most unlikely setting, at a festival. I had read about the ancient Chinese fermented drink a couple of times all over the net and one of the biggest health benefits that I’m always willing to try is for gut health.
Kombucha is a fermented beverage consisting of black tea and sugar (from various sources, including cane sugar, fruit or honey) that’s used as a functional, probiotic food. It contains a colony of bacteria and yeast that are responsible for initiating the fermentation process once combined with sugar.
After fermentation, kombucha becomes carbonated and contains vinegar, B vitamins, enzymes, probiotics and a high concentration of acid (acetic, gluconic and lactic). These bacteria are known as “cellulose-producing bacteria,” meaning they produce cellulose, which acts as a shield to cells. (1)
The sugar-tea solution is fermented by bacteria and yeast commonly known as a “SCOBY” (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast). Although it’s usually made with black tea, kombucha can also be made with green teas. Contrary to common claims, a SCOBY is not a kombucha mushroom.
After a crazy first night at the festival, I woke up needing something to make me feel alive again and a little less dizzy. In comes the Kombucha stand that just so happened to read ‘ Best hangover cure’ , desperate and finding the moment to be a little serendipitous I decided to go for it. I braced myself for what I thought would be a ghastly taste but much to my surprise it wasn’t so bad, infact I actually liked it and whats even better is after guzzling down one a few hours later I was feeling like myself again, almost a miracle really considering how hangovers have become a 3 day recovering process. To say the least I was completely sold and I found some more awesome benefits that you might like.
