Anxiety, wellness and herbal remedies

We have all in one way or another felt those tugs of anxiety creeping up on us when we’re at our most stressed, especially when life decides to throw you a curve ball which you need to work your way around. How a person deals with stress, anxiety and even depression varies and there is not necessarily a wrong way but there are different options that can be considered.

One such alternative that has been introduced over the last few years is Kava. It grows in the shape of a shrub, light green in colour and heart shaped leaves. This plant grows low on the ground in tropical climates, particularly the Pacific Ocean islands (Fiji, Samoa, Hawaii, and the Republic of Vanuatu).

The kava plant has been traditionally brewed as a ceremonial drink and herbal remedy. People say that it helps a great deal with anxiety, stress, restlessness, as well as insomnia, by producing a pleasant sensation and providing a calming, relaxing effect to the individual.

Recently introduced on menus at some hotspots in Manhattan , and the must have item you will  find in your favorite wellness influencers cupboard, the mind altering plant has caused much conversation and heated debate. ‘And, while kava’s 100 percent legal, some good-life practitioners swear that it helps them get seriously elevated. Plus, the science backs them up; according to Danielle DuBois, co-founder of Sakara and fan of the root, “Kava has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. It also up-regulates receptors of GABA, a neurotransmitter that’s essential for healthy brain function and balanced moods.” (well and good nyc )

This unconventional way of dealing with our occasional anxiety has definitely  grabbed our attention and we’re curious as to which health stores in S.A stock some of it.

What has worked for you in your moment of stress and anxiety?

Note: As with any traditional medicine or herbal remedy, it is always advisable to see a medical professional before taking anything new and to be cognisant of your medical needs.
